Spectacle Island, located in the Sheepscot River, is comprised of two small islets connected at low tide by a rocky beach, and is thus named for its resemblance to a pair of reading glasses. The northern end of Spectacle is owned by Boothbay Region Land Trust and the southern end by Midcoast Conservancy. The small island provides a great stopping spot to explore tide pools and is popular with picnickers. Low-impact day and overnight use is permitted. A sheltered campsite is available on a first come, first serve basis. Fires are allowed in established ring only, but due to thin soils and the fragile island ecosystem, please only burn driftwood found along the shorelines. Due to its popularity, please respect others and limit the length of your stay. All waste must be carried out.
Boats must anchor off the eastern shore and gain access by dinghy. Canoes and kayaks may gain access by landing on the sandy beach.The island as easily accessible by canoe or kayak from the town landing on McKown Point Road, a distance of 2 miles traveling under the Southport bridge.
Directions to Spectacle Island: Accessible by boat only. Dinghy/kayak landing from south side, or on the north side in a strong SW wind.
