Pine Tree is 144-acre preserve featuring a loop trail of approximately one mile. About half way around the loop, a logging road extends about one-half mile further up to the northern property line, offering the possibility of a two-mile moderate hike. The trails at Pine Tree are cut high and are suitable for mountain bikes as well as hikers on foot.
Pine Tree Preserve was donated in 2006 by the Pine Tree Conservation Society. The property, once open pasture, was later abandoned to tree growth. The old logging roads gradually rise almost 200 feet from Route 96 to the edge of the Boothbay Harbor Country Club on the North. The headwaters of Meadow Brook, a protected aquifer which empties into Lobster Cove, are to the South. The generally forested habitat includes several old gravel pits which have become ponds as well as some wetlands. The preserve is rich in flora and fauna; an occasional beaver and moose have been sighted, as well as a wide variety of birdlife. Mixed hardwoods are interspersed with evergreens and the forest floor is thickly carpeted with wildflowers and ferns.
Directions to Pine Tree Preserve: From the junction of Routes 27 and 96 at Boothbay Harbor’s only traffic light, travel east on Route 96 for 0.5 mile. The entrance and parking lot are tucked in on your left.
