The State of Maine Loons

February 6 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Join us for an engaging presentation by Nick Lund, Maine Audubon’s Network and Outreach Manager, as we explore the fascinating world of the Common Loon. A Maine native and renowned birder, Nick is well-known for his entertaining and insightful writing in publications like Audubon, Slate, Down East, and National Geographic, as well as his popular online presence at “The Birdist.”

The Common Loon, with its haunting calls and striking appearance, is a symbol of Maine summers. But how much do you really know about this iconic bird? Do loons migrate? What do they eat? How long do they live? Why are they important, and how many are there?

In this program, Nick will take an in-depth look at the physiology and habits of the Common Loon, revealing how its unique body is perfectly adapted for underwater hunting and the seasonal rhythms that bring it to Maine’s lakes. He will also discuss the threats loons face and the ongoing efforts to protect them.

For more than 35 years, Maine Audubon has been a leader in studying loon populations, identifying causes of loon mortality, and advocating for policies to ensure their survival. Come learn how these efforts help preserve the loon’s place in Maine’s natural heritage, ensuring that their calls continue to echo across our lakes for generations to come.

This program is free and open to the public.  Group size is limited and registration is required by filling out this form:
