The free 1-mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read-aloud book Nature Did It First\, written by Karen Ansberry and illustrated by Jennifer DiRubbio. \n A 2021 Skipping Stones Honor Award “Outstanding Nature and Ecology Book”. What child doesn’t want to know how things work? Introduce a young reader in your life to how nature works and inspires innovation to help solve some of our toughest engineering challenges. This kid-friendly\, beautiful introduction to biomimicry is half playful rhymes and half nonfiction\, perfect for ages 5 and up.

The current story trail features the read-aloud book The Beavers’ Busy Year\, written by Mary Holland. \nAlong a stream a dam pops out of the water. Beavers are busy at work! These aquatic mammals have unique traits that aid them in building the perfect lodge to raise young beavers and keep predators away. Mary Holland’s vibrant photographs document the beavers’ activities through the course of a year. Do these beavers ever take a break? Follow along as they pop through the winter ice to begin the busy year of eating bark\, building dams and gathering food just in time for winter to come again.

A Maine native and renowned birder\, Nick is well-known for his entertaining and insightful writing in publications like Audubon\, Slate\, Down East\, and National Geographic\, as well as his popular online presence at “The Birdist.” \nThe Common Loon\, with its haunting calls and striking appearance\, is a symbol of Maine summers. But how much do you really know about this iconic bird? Do loons migrate? What do they eat? How long do they live? Why are they important\, and how many are there? \nIn this program\, Nick will take an in-depth look at the physiology and habits of the Common Loon\, revealing how its unique body is perfectly adapted for underwater hunting and the seasonal rhythms that bring it to Maine’s lakes. He will also discuss the threats loons face and the ongoing efforts to protect them. \nFor more than 35 years\, Maine Audubon has been a leader in studying loon populations\, identifying causes of loon mortality\, and advocating for policies to ensure their survival.
