SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Lantern Walk
DESCRIPTION:With the shortest hours of daylight upon us\, lanterns bring warmth and illumination to the darkness. Celebrate the winter solstice and the return to longer days with a self-guided lightly illuminated walk at Boothbay Region Land Trust’s Oak Point Farm. Arrive anytime between 4 and 7 pm and follow the lanterns spaced along a 1/2 mile universal access trail encircling a freshwater pond\, through field and forest\, with moonlit views of a tidal cove. Bring a thermos full of tea or hot cocoa and enjoy nature from a new perspective. BRLT staff will be on-hand attending a firepit warming station and look forward to seeing you. A naturalist will lead the group on a short and easy walk through field and forest along the new universal access trail at Oak Point Farm. SUMMARY:Wild Mushrooms in Maine: A walk through a world of wonder and beauty
DESCRIPTION:With summer and fall rains come a rich and diverse flush of would mushrooms in our forests and fields. Mushrooms have grabbed the imagination and interest of all as we seek a closer relationship with nature and a better understanding of the ecology of our forests. Join a Maine mushroom expert Greg Marley for an exploration of fungal ecology\, edibility\, toxicity and above all the wonder of mushrooms. Come prepared for a good walk in the woods\, an open mind and your curiosity. Feel free to bring in a couple of mushrooms to identify or to show off. \nGreg Marley has been collecting\, studying\, eating\, growing and teaching mushrooms for over 45 years. He has spread his love of mushrooms to hundreds through walks\, talks and classes held across the New England over the past 30 years. Marley is the author of Mushrooms for Health; Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi\, (Downeast Books \, 2009) and the award-winning Chanterelle Dreams\, Amanita Nightmares; The Love Lore and Mystic of Mushrooms\, (Chelsea Green\, 2010). As a volunteer mushroom identification consultant to Poison Centers\, he provides expertise in mushroom poisoning cases. When not mushrooming\, Marley works as a mental health clinician and behavioral health consultant specializing in suicide prevention and suicide grief. \nGroup is limited to 20 participants with the walk to follow current CDC Covid guidelines for outside gatherings. DESCRIPTION:Looking for something to do with your kids during this time of remote learning and social distancing? Come outside and read a family friendly book while on a short and easy hike!  The free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed anytime during daylight hours. The current story trail features the book “Hey\, Little Ant” by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. Written first as a song by a father and daughter\, this illustrated book features the dialogue of a plucky ant and the kid about to carelessly squish it. Tension builds as the ant states a compelling case for its survival while the kid’s friends gather round to taunt the kid for hesitating. The final line of the book is a question–“What do you think that kid should do?”–leaving the decision squarely in the hands of the reader. Because the book asks children to decide the outcome\, it has been widely used by educators and caregivers to discuss everything from bullying to the ethical treatment of animals. The BRLT Story Trail Walk will feature a new book every few weeks throughout the pandemic at Oak Point Farm.
