The current story trail features the read-aloud book “The First Blade of Sweetgrass”\, written by Susan Greenlaw and Gabriel Frey with illustrations by Nancy Baker. \nIn this story\, Musqon is excited to accompany her grandmother for the first time to pick grass for basket making\, but she must learn to distinguish the sweetgrass from other salt marsh grasses. Frustrated at first\, she closes her eyes and lets the sun’s warmth and the spirit and peace of the marsh fill her. She sees her ancestors gathering grass as they have done for centuries. At last\, the bright emerald blades of sweetgrass stand out before her\, inviting her to harvest them. But she remembers not to pick the first blade she sees\, leaving it to grow for future generations. \nThe story trail at Oak Point Farm is open year-round during daylight hours\, with a new book posted every four to five weeks. DESCRIPTION:After a long Maine winter\, the first signs of spring are a welcome sight\, offering promises of growth and renewal. While some of the signs of spring are obvious\, like longer daylight and warming temperatures\, some are less noticeable\, such as the swelling of buds on trees and the return of frogs and salamanders to our vernal pools. Discover the signs of spring during a slow-paced 1-mile walk through field and forest\, alongside a freshwater pond and tidal inlets. \nThis free event is open to everyone and limited to 12 participants. Registration is required by contacting BRLT Environmental Educator Tracey Hall at thall@bbrlt.org or 207-633-4818. In the case we need to reschedule due to inclement weather\, we’ll notify those registered by email and post an update to this page. DESCRIPTION:With the shortest hours of daylight upon us\, lanterns bring warmth and illumination to the darkness. Celebrate the winter solstice and the return to longer days with a self-guided lightly illuminated walk at Boothbay Region Land Trust’s Oak Point Farm. Arrive anytime between 4 and 7 pm and follow the lanterns spaced along a 1/2 mile universal access trail encircling a freshwater pond\, through field and forest\, with moonlit views of a tidal cove. Bring a thermos full of tea or hot cocoa and enjoy nature from a new perspective. BRLT staff will be on-hand attending a firepit warming station and look forward to seeing you. SUMMARY:Halloween Story Trail: Room on the Broom
DESCRIPTION:Read a family friendly book while walking through the woods. Follow the illustrated signs along the trail as they tell a tale that puts you in the Halloween spirit. The free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read aloud book “Room on the Broom” by Julia Donaldson with illustrations by Axel Scheffler. \nThe witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat\, then her bow\, and then her wand!  Luckily\, three helpful animals find the missing items\, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom.  But is there room on the broom for so many friends?  And when disaster strikes\, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon? \n

DESCRIPTION:With summer and fall rains come a rich and diverse flush of would mushrooms in our forests and fields. Mushrooms have grabbed the imagination and interest of all as we seek a closer relationship with nature and a better understanding of the ecology of our forests. Join a Maine mushroom expert Greg Marley for an exploration of fungal ecology\, edibility\, toxicity and above all the wonder of mushrooms. Come prepared for a good walk in the woods\, an open mind and your curiosity. Feel free to bring in a couple of mushrooms to identify or to show off. \nGreg Marley has been collecting\, studying\, eating\, growing and teaching mushrooms for over 45 years. He has spread his love of mushrooms to hundreds through walks\, talks and classes held across the New England over the past 30 years. Marley is the author of Mushrooms for Health; Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi\, (Downeast Books \, 2009) and the award-winning Chanterelle Dreams\, Amanita Nightmares; The Love Lore and Mystic of Mushrooms\, (Chelsea Green\, 2010). As a volunteer mushroom identification consultant to Poison Centers\, he provides expertise in mushroom poisoning cases. When not mushrooming\, Marley works as a mental health clinician and behavioral health consultant specializing in suicide prevention and suicide grief. \nGroup is limited to 20 participants with the walk to follow current CDC Covid guidelines for outside gatherings.
