SUMMARY:Story Trail Walk: Hiders Seekers Finders Keepers
DESCRIPTION:Read a family-friendly book while walking through the woods. Follow the illustrated signs along the trail as they tell a tale that connects you to your natural surroundings. The free 1-mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read-aloud book “Hiders Seekers Finders Keepers”\, written by Jessica and illustrated by Salini Perera. \nIn this poetic book\, discover the many ways animals prepare for the challenges of winter. Some\, the hiders\, choose a place to rest and wait out the winter\, hibernating under the ground or snuggling in a sheltered spot. Other creatures are seekers\, migrating to new locations where the weather is milder and the food sources more plentiful. And then there are the finders\, who keep warm and fed by adapting to the new conditions. Every animal knows just what to do — following an ingenious plan that’s just right for them! \nThe story trail at Oak Point Farm is open year-round during daylight hours\, with a new book posted every four to five weeks. Current book titles and dates will be updated on our website.

SUMMARY:Self-Guided Winter Tree Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:From bark to twigs to a tree silhouette against a cold winter sky\, this is the perfect time to go into the woods and observe and learn tree identification. This self-guided one mile walk will focus on the non-leaf characteristics used to identify tree species including bark patterns and textures\, leaf buds and scars\, tree shapes\, and habitat. Along the wooded trail that ends with views of the Cross River\, hikers will find over a dozen different tree species native to our area.  Pick up the winter tree identification pamphlet at the Cross River Preserve parking lot kiosk and follow the trail to find the individually marked trees described within. The trail is open anytime during daylight hours at Cross River Preserve. Winter hiking conditions are present so sturdy boots with traction devices are recommended.

To sign up for the waiting list\, please send your name\, contact information\, and the number of people in your party to BRLT Environmental Educator Tracey Hall at thall@bbrlt.org.*** \n  \nJoin us at Boothbay Region Land Trust’s Oak Point Farm as we welcome Chewonki and two of their live owls to the farmhouse\, where they will introduce participants to the owls native to Maine and New England. Beginning with slides and sounds\, participants will learn the identifying characteristics and calls of each owl.  Then\, using talons\, wings\, and skulls\, we explore the adaptations of these silent nocturnal hunters. This program ends with an intimate and detailed look at live owls\, bringing these creatures of the night into the light! \n

The current story trail features the read-aloud book “I am Birch”\, written and illustrated by Scott Kelley. \nA birch tree is an unlikely champion and protector of the forest in this story inspired by Gluskap\, the heroic and kind-hearted figure of Wabanaki legends. As rumors of coming cold and darkness spread through the woods\, chaos and fear grow. In a panic to collect and store food\, the animals do damage to their very homes. The birch\, now only a stump\, remains firmly rooted and\, with the wisdom and dry humor that only a stump can possess\, helps the animals put their fears to rest. \nThe story trail at Oak Point Farm is open year-round during daylight hours\, with a new book posted every four to five weeks.
