DESCRIPTION:Read a family-friendly book while walking through the woods. Follow the illustrated signs along the trail as they tell a tale that connects you to your natural surroundings. The free 1-mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read-aloud book “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt”\, written by Kate Messner with art by Christopher Silas Neal. \nThis book is a sweet exploration of the hidden world and many lives of a garden over the course of a year. Up in the garden\, the world is full of green—leaves and sprouts\, growing vegetables\, ripening fruit. But down in the dirt\, there is a busy world of earthworms digging\, snakes hunting\, skunks burrowing\, and all the other animals that make a garden their home. In this exuberant and lyrical book\, discover the wonders that lie hidden between stalks\, under the shade of leaves…and down in the dirt. \nThe story trail at Oak Point Farm is open year-round during daylight hours\, with a new book posted every four to five weeks. Current book titles will be updated on our website.

The current story trail features the read-aloud book “The First Blade of Sweetgrass”\, written by Susan Greenlaw and Gabriel Frey with illustrations by Nancy Baker. \nIn this story\, Musqon is excited to accompany her grandmother for the first time to pick grass for basket making\, but she must learn to distinguish the sweetgrass from other salt marsh grasses. Frustrated at first\, she closes her eyes and lets the sun’s warmth and the spirit and peace of the marsh fill her. She sees her ancestors gathering grass as they have done for centuries. At last\, the bright emerald blades of sweetgrass stand out before her\, inviting her to harvest them. But she remembers not to pick the first blade she sees\, leaving it to grow for future generations. \nThe story trail at Oak Point Farm is open year-round during daylight hours\, with a new book posted every four to five weeks.
