SUMMARY:Story Trail: A Logs Life
DESCRIPTION:Looking for something to do with your kids during this time of remote learning and social distancing? Come outside and read a family friendly book while on a short and easy hike!  This free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed anytime during daylight hours. The current story trail features the book “A Logs Life” by Wendy Pfeffer. The book is an informative and creative tale about a fallen oak tree in the forest\, teaching young readers about the various purposes it serves in the ecosystem during every step of its life cycle. After your story walk\, see if you can find your own fallen log to investigate. Share your results with BRLT on Facebook or via email at brlt@bbrlt.org; we’d love to see them!

SUMMARY:"Love to Hike" Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Can you find the hidden hearts at Penny Lake Preserve? Edgecomb Eddy School Kindergarten teacher Cindy Casey set up a fun scavenger hunt for her students that is open to everyone to try. Entitled “Love to Hike”\, participants are challenged to find the 18 hidden rocks with red hearts painted on them scattered throughout the preserve. Download the map here\, which marks the trails\, features\, and the approximate location of the rocks\, which makes for easy orienteering for families. Are you up for the challenge? Follow the “Love to Hike” map online or find one at the Penny Lake kiosk. Head out onto the trail and find the heart rocks\, remembering to leave them in place for the next person to find. A reminder that social distancing guidelines are in place for hiking\, such as keeping 6 feet apart on the trail and returning at another time if the parking lot is full. Happy hunting!

SUMMARY:Apple Tree Pruning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Now is a great time to prune apple trees. Pruning in late winter determines a tree’s summer growth and health\, which is then reflected in both the quality of the fruit in the fall and bud set for the following year’s fruit crop. Join us to learn the basics of how to prune apple trees and how to identify and remove overwintering insect pests. Following a 40-minute indoor introduction\, participants will go out to the heritage apple trees of Oak Point Farm for demonstrations and hands-on experience. Instructors Ron Ross and Fred Kraeuter have 70 apple trees\, representing 50 heirloom varieties\, in their River Rd orchard in Boothbay. Many of their young trees\, initially grafted 4-5 years ago\, are just now beginning to flower and bear fruit. In addition to the young trees\, a few alternate-year-bearing mature trees have been producing thousands of apples. Ron is founder and presenter of BRLT’s Annual Apple Talk\, Tasting\, and Tour\, which last September attracted 175 attendees. Space is limited and registration is required. To register contact BRLT Environmental Educator Tracey Hall at thall@bbrlt.org or 633-4818.

SUMMARY:Climate Change\, the Decline of Birds and Insects\, and Other Alarming News
DESCRIPTION:A recently published study in Science reports that there are nearly three billion fewer birds in North America than there were in the 1970s. This news follows reports of declining insect populations and a changing climate. What is happening and what can be done? How can we help? Join us for a closer look at these subjects and other alarming news with Dr. Jeffery Wells.\nDr. Wells is a Fellow of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Vice President of Boreal Conservation for National Audubon. He is one of the nation’s leading bird experts and conservation biologists and author of “Birder’s Conservation Handbook”. Along with his wife Allison Childs Wells\, he authors the weekly column “A Bird’s Tale” in the Boothbay Register. Both are widely published natural history writers and are the authors of the book\, “Maine’s Favorite Birds”.\nThis free talk is cosponsored by Indivisible Boothbay and will take place inside the farmhouse at BRLT’s Oak Point Farm\, with seating limited to 25 participants. Registration is required by contacting BRLT Environmental Educator Tracey Hall at thall@bbrlt.org of 633-4818.

SUMMARY:Points of View Art Auction
DESCRIPTION:From Barters Island to Ocean Point\, and everything in between\, the Boothbay peninsula is overflowing with terrific galleries and talented artists inspired by the region. There is no better advocate for land conservation than the artists that capture the beauty of our stunning field\, forest\, and waterfront landscapes. Since 1995\, Boothbay Region Land Trust has hosted the Points of View Art Auction to highlight the incredible work of our regional artists\, while also raising funds to support land protection and public access to many of the same places these artists convey in their work. \nThis quadrennial live auction is particularly important since all proceeds will support the This Land is Your Land: Campaign for Oak Point Farm. The event will take place at Oak Point Farm\, a 32-acre public preserve that also serves as BRLT’s new headquarters. In addition to this year’s exciting new event location\, the auction will include the sale of sculptures created during the Maine Stone Symposium\, thanks to a partnership with Sculpture Boothbay. \nHonorary chair Don Demers will again be donating a featured piece to our live auction\, as well as artists Corrine McIntyre\, Peter Egeli\, June Elderkin\, Pat Berger\, John Butke and Brad Betts\, just to name a few. We will also have the professional services of Thomaston Auction Place Galleries serving as auctioneers\, and Seacoast Catering serving up a delicious and hearty spread. \nThis is an event not to be missed! Tickets are $100/person and includes a variety of delectables\, complimentary drinks and live music\, in addition to the auction. Get your tickets through the BRLT office at (207) 633-4818 or here.
