SUMMARY:Cross River Preserve Hike
DESCRIPTION:Discover the history and ecology of Cross River Preserve during a leisurely one mile hike with Boothbay Region Land Trust Environmental Educator Tracey Hall. Enjoy a stroll through mixed forest and along a freshwater wetland and stream\, before reaching the tidal shoreline and mudflats of the Cross River. The Cross River area was first settled in the mid-1700’s\, with much of the forest being cleared and used as pastureland. The fields were abandoned around a century later\, and the forest slowly returned to what we see today. The preserve is home to a variety of trees including some large diameter Red Oak and White Pine\, which probably served as field boundary markers over 100 years ago. The habitat within the preserve is diverse and attracts a variety of creatures including song birds\, aquatic insects\, and amphibians. Group is limited to 10 participants with the walk to follow current CDC Covid guidelines for outside gatherings. Registration is required by contacting Tracey at thall@bbrlt.org or 633-4818.

The free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read aloud book “Water is Water: A Book About the Water Cycle” by Miranda Paul with illustrations by Jason Chin. This spare\, poetic picture book follows a group of kids as they move through all the different phases of the water cycle. From rain to fog to snow to mist\, words and images combine to create a beautiful and informative journey in this innovative nonfiction picture book that will leave you thirsty for more. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join our newly formed Committee to Limit Invasive Plants (CLIP). CLIP work parties will take place every other Wednesday at Penny Lake Preserve during the summer of 2021 (Penny Lake will be the focus point for the group’s initial efforts throughout the summer). CLIP volunteers will be helping eradicate invasive shrubs and vines (bush honeysuckle\, oriental bittersweet\, multi flora rose\, autumn olive\, and Japanese barberry) on this preserve.  Work will consist of pulling\, cutting\, and piling invasive brush that will be chipped or burned later. No prior knowledge or experience with invasive plants is needed. Training will be provided including species identification and removal techniques. Some tools will be available\, but volunteers are welcome and encouraged to bring their favorite pruning shears\, loppers\, or pulling/cutting devices. Long pants\, long sleeve shirts\, and gloves are recommended as well as bug spray and water. Your help is vital to supporting native ecosystems on our preserves!

DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is full at this time. Please consider joining us on a future hike. Discover the history and ecology of Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve during a leisurely one mile hike with Boothbay Region Land Trust Environmental Educator Tracey Hall. This preserves is exceedingly rich in wildlife\, with more than 140 species of migratory and nesting birds sighted\, along with a variety of other creatures. Wildflowers adorn the meadow from spring to fall\, attracting multitudes of butterflies. In 1880 the stream traversing the wetlands was dammed\, creating a large lake that was used for a thriving business harvesting\, storing and selling ice. The ice works closed in 1907 but the dam remains in place to stabilize the water level and secure this critical part of Lobster Cove Meadow’s outstanding wildlife habitat. SUMMARY:Salamanders and Algae: From Roommates to Intimate Partners
DESCRIPTION:Each spring the vernal pools throughout our region host a flurry of activity just below the surface. Amphibians meet in these locations to reproduce\, leaving behind their eggs and offspring. Dr. John Burns of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences visits our local vernal pools to study the symbiotic relationship between algae and spotted salamander eggs and larva. Join us to learn about his work through an online presentation on Friday April 30th at 10 AM hosted by the Boothbay Region Land Trust. Yellow spotted salamanders migrate en masse to vernal pools to mate and lay eggs\, which swell to form a dense jelly mass holding around 100 embryos each. These eggs and embryos are colonized by a tiny green alga\, which have adapted to one another to both benefit from this arrangement. Alga invades the baby salamander tissues and cells forming the only known such association in any vertebrate. In this talk\, Burns will speak about the salamander-alga association and discuss the context of why it is currently under intense scrutiny. The uniqueness of the interaction has implications for the development of our own adaptive immune systems. John Burns is a senior research scientist working at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. He received his bachelor’s degree in geoscience from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, and a master’s and Ph.D. in molecular biology from New York University. He spent five years broadening his horizons working on evolutionary biology and symbioses involving protists and algae at the American Museum of Natural History in New York before starting his own research group in Maine. Today he continues to work on symbiotic interactions\, how DNA codes the shapes of cells\, and how genetic patterns influence microbe functions in the world’s oceans. DESCRIPTION:Interested in practicing conservation in your own backyard? Join us for an online zoom presentation to learn about the newly developed Certification Program for Conservation Landscapes offered locally by the Knox-Lincoln Soil Water Conservation District. This program will help you implement recommended conservation practices in a systematic way\, with guidance and ideas from KLSWCD staff and one-on-one help on your property. It is also a chance to measure your progress and share ideas and practices with your neighbors\, friends and family. Residents who complete the Conservation Landscape Certification receive a certificate and document that can support other conservation work they are doing\, such as working with the NRCS or state agencies. You can post sign indicating your property is certified\, which is a great way to start conversations with others about your efforts. But it’s likely your own immediate reward will be the chance to watch birds and wildlife inhabiting your land\, feeding\, and raising young\, and seeing beautiful changes in the landscape.
