CLIP volunteers will be helping eradicate invasive shrubs and vines (bush honeysuckle\, oriental bittersweet\, multi flora rose\, autumn olive\, and Japanese barberry) on this preserve.  Work will consist of pulling\, cutting\, and piling invasive brush that will be chipped or burned later. No prior knowledge or experience with invasive plants is needed. Training will be provided including species identification and removal techniques. Some tools will be available\, but volunteers are welcome and encouraged to bring their favorite pruning shears\, loppers\, or pulling/cutting devices. Long pants\, long sleeve shirts\, and gloves are recommended as well as bug spray and water. Your help is vital to supporting native ecosystems on our preserves!

SUMMARY:Salamanders and Algae: From Roommates to Intimate Partners
DESCRIPTION:Each spring the vernal pools throughout our region host a flurry of activity just below the surface. Amphibians meet in these locations to reproduce\, leaving behind their eggs and offspring. Dr. John Burns of Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences visits our local vernal pools to study the symbiotic relationship between algae and spotted salamander eggs and larva. Join us to learn about his work through an online presentation on Friday April 30th at 10 AM hosted by the Boothbay Region Land Trust. Yellow spotted salamanders migrate en masse to vernal pools to mate and lay eggs\, which swell to form a dense jelly mass holding around 100 embryos each. These eggs and embryos are colonized by a tiny green alga\, which have adapted to one another to both benefit from this arrangement. Alga invades the baby salamander tissues and cells forming the only known such association in any vertebrate. In this talk\, Burns will speak about the salamander-alga association and discuss the context of why it is currently under intense scrutiny. The uniqueness of the interaction has implications for the development of our own adaptive immune systems. John Burns is a senior research scientist working at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. He received his bachelor’s degree in geoscience from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, and a master’s and Ph.D. in molecular biology from New York University. He spent five years broadening his horizons working on evolutionary biology and symbioses involving protists and algae at the American Museum of Natural History in New York before starting his own research group in Maine. Today he continues to work on symbiotic interactions\, how DNA codes the shapes of cells\, and how genetic patterns influence microbe functions in the world’s oceans. DESCRIPTION:Interested in practicing conservation in your own backyard? Join us for an online zoom presentation to learn about the newly developed Certification Program for Conservation Landscapes offered locally by the Knox-Lincoln Soil Water Conservation District. This program will help you implement recommended conservation practices in a systematic way\, with guidance and ideas from KLSWCD staff and one-on-one help on your property. It is also a chance to measure your progress and share ideas and practices with your neighbors\, friends and family. Residents who complete the Conservation Landscape Certification receive a certificate and document that can support other conservation work they are doing\, such as working with the NRCS or state agencies. You can post sign indicating your property is certified\, which is a great way to start conversations with others about your efforts. But it’s likely your own immediate reward will be the chance to watch birds and wildlife inhabiting your land\, feeding\, and raising young\, and seeing beautiful changes in the landscape. SUMMARY:Self-Guided Winter Tree Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:From bark to twigs to a tree silhouette against a cold winter sky\, this is the perfect time to go into the woods and observe and learn tree identification. This self-guided one mile walk will focus on the non-leaf characteristics used to identify tree species including bark patterns and textures\, leaf buds and scars\, tree shapes\, and habitat. Along the wooded trail that ends with views of the Cross River\, hikers will find over a dozen different tree species native to our area.  Pick up the winter tree identification pamphlet at the Cross River Preserve parking lot kiosk and follow the trail to find the individually marked trees described within. The trail is open anytime during daylight hours throughout the month of February at Cross River Preserve. Please practice social distancing and wear a mask.

As the cub searches for an answer he is helped by a whole host of animals who bring the brilliant colors of the forest to him. What the animals create together with their treasures is a magical symbol of the holiday season and a timeless testimonial to the joy of friendship and sharing.

Come outside and read a family friendly book while on a short and easy hike!  The free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed anytime during daylight hours. The current story trail features the book “Hey\, Little Ant” by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. Written first as a song by a father and daughter\, this illustrated book features the dialogue of a plucky ant and the kid about to carelessly squish it. Tension builds as the ant states a compelling case for its survival while the kid’s friends gather round to taunt the kid for hesitating. The final line of the book is a question–“What do you think that kid should do?”–leaving the decision squarely in the hands of the reader. Because the book asks children to decide the outcome\, it has been widely used by educators and caregivers to discuss everything from bullying to the ethical treatment of animals. The BRLT Story Trail Walk will feature a new book every few weeks throughout the pandemic at Oak Point Farm.

DESCRIPTION:During this time of social distancing\, Boothbay Region Land Trust is offering a self-guided forest bathing walk at Hendricks Head Hiking Trail. Forest bathing is the practice of spending time in woods for the purpose of enhancing health\, wellness\, and happiness. Connect to the outdoors as you follow the forest bathing invitations mounted on posts spaced along the trail. The invitations offer gentle opportunities to build your sensory awareness while exploring your natural surroundings. This leisurely walk covers less then a mile of moderate terrain and was designed by certified forest therapy guide and BRLT environmental educator Tracey Hall. It is open during daylight hours for the month of August with parking available at Hendrick’s Head Beach.  Please practice social distancing as you walk and enjoy your time in the forest. \n  \n
