SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Lantern Walk
DESCRIPTION:With the shortest hours of daylight upon us\, lanterns bring warmth and illumination to the darkness. Celebrate the winter solstice and the return to longer days with a self-guided lightly illuminated walk at Boothbay Region Land Trust’s Oak Point Farm. Arrive anytime between 4 and 7 pm and follow the lanterns spaced along a 1/2 mile universal access trail encircling a freshwater pond\, through field and forest\, with moonlit views of a tidal cove. Bundle up and come enjoy nature from a new perspective. BRLT staff will be on-hand attending a firepit warming station and a hot beverage bar and look forward to seeing you. Turn right onto Autumn View Road (formerly Giles Road). Continue down the dirt road until reaching the preserve parking lot.

SUMMARY:Paddle to Indiantown Island Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Grab your kayak or canoe and join BRLT Executive Director and registered Maine Kayak Guide Nick Ullo as he paddles out to Indiantown Island Preserve. This 3-mile paddle will begin in the Townsend Gut and travel up the Sheepscot River before landing at the Indiantown Island float. Paddlers will have the opportunity to stretch their legs with a 1-mile hike led by Environmental Educator Tracey Hall\, in which she will share the natural and cultural history of the preserve. This round-trip paddle launches at the float at BRLT’s Oak Point Farm and is best suited for intermediate and advanced paddlers. During the voyage\, a BRLT representative will provide fascinating insights into the island’s rich history and unique natural features. \nOnce on the island\, enjoy a variety of activities including five miles of picturesque hiking trails\, tide-pooling\, and perfect spots for picnicking. You can also visit a small rustic museum to delve deeper into the island’s storied past. \nPlease be aware that Damariscove Island is a nature preserve with rugged terrain and limited amenities. The only facility available is a composting toilet. The island is nearly treeless with little to no shade. SUMMARY:CLIP Work Party
DESCRIPTION:Join our Committee to Limit Invasive Plants (CLIP). CLIP work parties will take place on Thursday mornings during the months of July and August at Penny Lake Preserve. CLIP volunteers will be helping eradicate invasive shrubs and vines (bush honeysuckle\, oriental bittersweet\, multi flora rose\, autumn olive\, and Japanese barberry) on this preserve.  Work will consist of pulling\, cutting\, and piling invasive brush that will be chipped or burned later. No prior knowledge or experience with invasive plants is needed. Training will be provided including species identification and removal techniques. \nSome tools will be available\, but volunteers are welcome and encouraged to bring their favorite pruning shears\, loppers\, or pulling/cutting devices. Begin your day with intention and reconnect with your body through mindful movement & focus on your breath while surrounded by the scenic beauty of a nature preserve. We will gently warm up our bodies in the morning air\, move through basic standing yoga postures\, do some strength-building\, and stretch our muscles. Class is open to all levels and suitable for beginners. Please bring your yoga mat or a towel. Donations are welcome and registration is not required.

This walk will focus on tree identification\, while branching into broader topics such as forest ecology\, historical land use\, silviculture\, and wildlife habitat. Jared’s flexible\, conversational style invites questions and curiosity. This is a great opportunity to deepen your understanding of Midcoast Maine’s woodlands\, learn practical tree ID tips\, and explore one of our newest protected spaces. \nThis walk will be approximately 1 mile in length over uneven terrain.
