SUMMARY:Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve Hike (Event Full)
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This event is full at this time. Please consider joining us on a future hike. Discover the history and ecology of Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve during a leisurely one mile hike with Boothbay Region Land Trust Environmental Educator Tracey Hall. This preserves is exceedingly rich in wildlife\, with more than 140 species of migratory and nesting birds sighted\, along with a variety of other creatures. Wildflowers adorn the meadow from spring to fall\, attracting multitudes of butterflies. In 1880 the stream traversing the wetlands was dammed\, creating a large lake that was used for a thriving business harvesting\, storing and selling ice. The ice works closed in 1907 but the dam remains in place to stabilize the water level and secure this critical part of Lobster Cove Meadow’s outstanding wildlife habitat. Group is limited to 10 participants with the walk to follow current CDC Covid guidelines for outside gatherings. Registration is required by contacting Tracey at thall@bbrlt.org or 633-4818.

SUMMARY:Story Trail Walk: Hey\, Little Ant
DESCRIPTION:Looking for something to do with your kids during this time of remote learning and social distancing? Come outside and read a family friendly book while on a short and easy hike!  The free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed anytime during daylight hours. The current story trail features the book “Hey\, Little Ant” by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. Written first as a song by a father and daughter\, this illustrated book features the dialogue of a plucky ant and the kid about to carelessly squish it. Tension builds as the ant states a compelling case for its survival while the kid’s friends gather round to taunt the kid for hesitating. The final line of the book is a question–“What do you think that kid should do?”–leaving the decision squarely in the hands of the reader. Because the book asks children to decide the outcome\, it has been widely used by educators and caregivers to discuss everything from bullying to the ethical treatment of animals. The BRLT Story Trail Walk will feature a new book every few weeks throughout the pandemic at Oak Point Farm.

SUMMARY:The Bird Word: Bird Nesting Blog
DESCRIPTION:Boothbay Region Land Trust volunteer and long-time birder\, Stan Wakefield\, regularly shares his observations and photos while monitoring BRLT’s bird boxes at Oak Point Farm\, Lobster Cove Meadow\, and Singing Meadows preserves. Learn about the variety of birds that are making homes in these boxes\, see great photos that document the nesting process\, and find out the best times to schedule a walk at our preserves and observe the busy feathered parents tending to their young (remember to bring your binoculars and observe from a distance). Observations and data from these boxes is also reported to NestWatch\, a citizen-science monitoring program developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and used nationwide to track the status and trends in the reproductive biology of birds. We encourage readers to check back frequently at this blog to track how nests in BRLT’s bird boxes are changing over the season. \nAccess blog here!

SUMMARY:Points of View Art Auction
DESCRIPTION:From Barters Island to Ocean Point\, and everything in between\, the Boothbay peninsula is overflowing with terrific galleries and talented artists inspired by the region. There is no better advocate for land conservation than the artists that capture the beauty of our stunning field\, forest\, and waterfront landscapes. Since 1995\, Boothbay Region Land Trust has hosted the Points of View Art Auction to highlight the incredible work of our regional artists\, while also raising funds to support land protection and public access to many of the same places these artists convey in their work. \nThis quadrennial live auction is particularly important since all proceeds will support the This Land is Your Land: Campaign for Oak Point Farm. The event will take place at Oak Point Farm\, a 32-acre public preserve that also serves as BRLT’s new headquarters. In addition to this year’s exciting new event location\, the auction will include the sale of sculptures created during the Maine Stone Symposium\, thanks to a partnership with Sculpture Boothbay. \nHonorary chair Don Demers will again be donating a featured piece to our live auction\, as well as artists Corrine McIntyre\, Peter Egeli\, June Elderkin\, Pat Berger\, John Butke and Brad Betts\, just to name a few. We will also have the professional services of Thomaston Auction Place Galleries serving as auctioneers\, and Seacoast Catering serving up a delicious and hearty spread. \nThis is an event not to be missed! Tickets are $100/person and includes a variety of delectables\, complimentary drinks and live music\, in addition to the auction. Get your tickets through the BRLT office at (207) 633-4818 or here.
