SUMMARY:Landscape Conservation Certification Program
DESCRIPTION:Interested in practicing conservation in your own backyard? Join us for an online zoom presentation to learn about the newly developed Certification Program for Conservation Landscapes offered locally by the Knox-Lincoln Soil Water Conservation District. This program will help you implement recommended conservation practices in a systematic way\, with guidance and ideas from KLSWCD staff and one-on-one help on your property. It is also a chance to measure your progress and share ideas and practices with your neighbors\, friends and family. Residents who complete the Conservation Landscape Certification receive a certificate and document that can support other conservation work they are doing\, such as working with the NRCS or state agencies. You can post sign indicating your property is certified\, which is a great way to start conversations with others about your efforts. But it’s likely your own immediate reward will be the chance to watch birds and wildlife inhabiting your land\, feeding\, and raising young\, and seeing beautiful changes in the landscape. This is the story of Ruby’s spark moment\, in her very own words. As you walk you will have the opportunity to find birds in the pages of the story and along the trail.

Learn about the variety of birds that are making homes in these boxes\, see great photos that document the nesting process\, and find out the best times to schedule a walk at our preserves and observe the busy feathered parents tending to their young (remember to bring your binoculars and observe from a distance). Observations and data from these boxes is also reported to NestWatch\, a citizen-science monitoring program developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and used nationwide to track the status and trends in the reproductive biology of birds. SUMMARY:"Love to Hike" Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Can you find the hidden hearts at Penny Lake Preserve? Edgecomb Eddy School Kindergarten teacher Cindy Casey set up a fun scavenger hunt for her students that is open to everyone to try. Entitled “Love to Hike”\, participants are challenged to find the 18 hidden rocks with red hearts painted on them scattered throughout the preserve. Download the map here\, which marks the trails\, features\, and the approximate location of the rocks\, which makes for easy orienteering for families. Are you up for the challenge? Follow the “Love to Hike” map online or find one at the Penny Lake kiosk. Head out onto the trail and find the heart rocks\, remembering to leave them in place for the next person to find. A reminder that social distancing guidelines are in place for hiking\, such as keeping 6 feet apart on the trail and returning at another time if the parking lot is full. Happy hunting!
