SUMMARY:Story Trail Walk: Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt
DESCRIPTION:Read a family-friendly book while walking through the woods. Follow the illustrated signs along the trail as they tell a tale that connects you to your natural surroundings. The free 1-mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read-aloud book “Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt”\, written by Kate Messner with art by Christopher Silas Neal. \nThis book is a sweet exploration of the hidden world and many lives of a garden over the course of a year. Up in the garden\, the world is full of green—leaves and sprouts\, growing vegetables\, ripening fruit. But down in the dirt\, there is a busy world of earthworms digging\, snakes hunting\, skunks burrowing\, and all the other animals that make a garden their home. In this exuberant and lyrical book\, discover the wonders that lie hidden between stalks\, under the shade of leaves…and down in the dirt. \nThe story trail at Oak Point Farm is open year-round during daylight hours\, with a new book posted every four to five weeks. Current book titles will be updated on our website.

SUMMARY:Signs of Spring Hike
DESCRIPTION:After a long Maine winter\, the first signs of spring are a welcome sight\, offering promises of growth and renewal. While some of the signs of spring are obvious\, like longer daylight and warming temperatures\, some are less noticeable\, such as the swelling of buds on trees and the return of frogs and salamanders to our vernal pools. Discover the signs of spring during a slow-paced 1-mile walk through field and forest\, alongside a freshwater pond and tidal inlets. \nThis free event is open to everyone and limited to 12 participants. Registration is required by contacting BRLT Environmental Educator Tracey Hall at thall@bbrlt.org or 207-633-4818. In the case we need to reschedule due to inclement weather\, we’ll notify those registered by email and post an update to this page. We love dogs\, but ask that you leave them at home for this guided hike.

SUMMARY:Story Trail Walk: Birdsong
DESCRIPTION:Read a family-friendly book while walking through the woods. Follow the illustrated signs along the trail as they tell a tale that connects you to your natural surroundings. The free 1-mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read-aloud book “Birdsong”\, written and illustrated by Julie Flett. \nWhen Katherena and her mother move to a small town\, Katherena feels lonely and out of place. But when she meets an elderly woman artist who lives next door\, named Agnes––her world starts to change. Katherena and Agnes share the same passions for arts and crafts\, birds\, and nature. But as the seasons change\, can Katherena navigate the failing health of her new friend? Award-winning author and artist Julie Flett’s textured images of birds\, flowers\, art\, and landscapes bring vibrancy and warmth to this powerful story\, which highlights the fulfillment of intergenerational relationships\, shared passions\, and spending time outdoors with the ones we love. \n

SUMMARY:Story Trail: Roxaboxen
DESCRIPTION:Read a family friendly book while walking through the spring woods. Follow the illustrated signs along the trail as they tell a tale that connects you to your natural surroundings. The free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the classic read aloud book “Roxaboxen” by Alice McLerran with illustrations by Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Barbara Cooney. \nRoxaboxen celebrates the imagination of children who\, no matter the time or place\, can create whole worlds out of what they find around them–here\, rocks and boxes\, cacti and sand. Marian and her friends find a special place in the desert where in time-honored fashion\, they play the games that will prepare them for their grown-up lives. They make houses\, drive pretend cars\, bake bread\, ride stick ponies\, fight their wars and bury their dead. Drawn from her mother’s reminiscences\, McLerran’s gentle text is both particular and universal\, as she fondly tells this evocative story.

SUMMARY:Landscape Conservation Certification Program
DESCRIPTION:Interested in practicing conservation in your own backyard? Join us for an online zoom presentation to learn about the newly developed Certification Program for Conservation Landscapes offered locally by the Knox-Lincoln Soil Water Conservation District. This program will help you implement recommended conservation practices in a systematic way\, with guidance and ideas from KLSWCD staff and one-on-one help on your property. It is also a chance to measure your progress and share ideas and practices with your neighbors\, friends and family. Residents who complete the Conservation Landscape Certification receive a certificate and document that can support other conservation work they are doing\, such as working with the NRCS or state agencies. You can post sign indicating your property is certified\, which is a great way to start conversations with others about your efforts. But it’s likely your own immediate reward will be the chance to watch birds and wildlife inhabiting your land\, feeding\, and raising young\, and seeing beautiful changes in the landscape. To register and receive the link for this online zoom presentation\, please click on the website link below or paste the following in your browser:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcqdeCvrj0iH9fwE-Hw19XYeLHHD_OUCKjc

SUMMARY:Story Trail: Ruby's Birds
DESCRIPTION:Read a family friendly book while walking through the spring woods. Follow the illustrated signs along the trail as they tell a tale that connects you to your natural surroundings. The free 1 mile story trail starts from the Oak Point Farm parking lot kiosk and can be completed at your own pace and on your own time. The current story trail features the read aloud book “Ruby’s Birds” by Mya Thompson with illustrations by Claudia Dávila. \nRuby is a plucky young girl who uncovers the wild side of her city neighborhood with the help of a grown-up friend. When Ruby realizes there are amazing birds right in her neighborhood\, her imagination takes flight. Birders have a name for the moment they get hooked―they call it their spark moment. This is the story of Ruby’s spark moment\, in her very own words. As you walk you will have the opportunity to find birds in the pages of the story and along the trail.

After your story walk\, see if you can find your own fallen log to investigate. Share your results with BRLT on Facebook or via email at brlt@bbrlt.org; we’d love to see them!

SUMMARY:"Love to Hike" Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Can you find the hidden hearts at Penny Lake Preserve? Edgecomb Eddy School Kindergarten teacher Cindy Casey set up a fun scavenger hunt for her students that is open to everyone to try. Entitled “Love to Hike”\, participants are challenged to find the 18 hidden rocks with red hearts painted on them scattered throughout the preserve. Download the map here\, which marks the trails\, features\, and the approximate location of the rocks\, which makes for easy orienteering for families. Are you up for the challenge? Follow the “Love to Hike” map online or find one at the Penny Lake kiosk. Head out onto the trail and find the heart rocks\, remembering to leave them in place for the next person to find. A reminder that social distancing guidelines are in place for hiking\, such as keeping 6 feet apart on the trail and returning at another time if the parking lot is full. Happy hunting!
