Dr. Goldstone will present on: \nThree Things You Should Know About Climate Change (but probably didn’t)\nFollowing Dr. Goldstone\, we will share the year-in-review\, which will highlight the work and accomplishments of BRLT. The evening will conclude with a short business meeting including voting on the Board slate. \nDr. Heather Goldstone oversees Woodwell Climate Research Center’s communications activities\, bringing the rich stories of Woodwell scientists to diverse public audiences. Dr. Goldstone has extensive experience as both a scientist and a journalist\, and she is passionate about melding data and narrative in climate change stories that build awareness and inspire action. \nDr. Goldstone came to Woodwell Climate from WGBH\, where she founded and hosted a weekly science-focused radio show\, Living Lab Radio. Previously\, she wrote the Climatide blog about coastal communities facing climate change. Her extensive reporting on science and the environment has appeared in outlets ranging from Cape Cod Times and Commercial Fishery News to NPR’s Morning Edition\, The Takeaway\, and PBS News Hour. In 2014\, she was recognized for the breadth of her work with WGBH’s Margret and Hans Rey/Curious George Producer award. \nDr. Goldstone fell in love with the ocean as a child\, and pursued a career in marine research before discovering a passion for science communication. She serves on the Woods Hole Sea Grant Marine Outreach Guidance Group\, is deeply involved in supporting local public schools\, and frequently teaches or mentors students in communication skills. \nVoting:\nNew Board Nominees:\nPenny is a native Floridian who spent her youth enjoying the beaches\, waterways\, and nature preserves between West Palm and Miami Beach. Ms. Pollard enjoyed a career as a health policy analyst and served for many years in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services\, the Office of Technology Assessment of the U.S. Congress\, and in the private sector at The Lewin Group.  Earlier in her career Ms. Pollard developed and oversaw the graduate program for Pediatric Nurse Practitioners at Catholic University in Washington\, DC\, and previously was a Public Health Nurse for the City of Boston.  Ms. Pollard graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors of Science; she also holds a Master of Science from Boston College\, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania\, Wharton School of Business (with concentrations in Finance and Marketing).  She is treasurer of the Smithsonian Women’s Committee and is a docent at the Hillwood Estate Museum and Gardens and the Textile Museum in D.C..  Locally\, she has served as a flag officer of the Southport Yacht Club and on the Boards of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Friends of Burnt Island Light. \n\nRenewing Board Members (Second Term):\nValerie Young \nKathleen Kennedy \nMargaret Reiser \nBoard Officers:\nJohn Welsh (President) \nRob Wheeler (Vice President) \nValerie Young (Treasurer) \nKathleen Kennedy (Secretary) \nVoting will take place during the presentation. All members are welcome at this free\, virtual event. The current story trail features the read aloud book “Water is Water: A Book About the Water Cycle” by Miranda Paul with illustrations by Jason Chin. This spare\, poetic picture book follows a group of kids as they move through all the different phases of the water cycle. From rain to fog to snow to mist\, words and images combine to create a beautiful and informative journey in this innovative nonfiction picture book that will leave you thirsty for more. \n

Our annual membership report and voting on new officers will follow. \nThe Annual Membership Meeting is open to all members of BRLT. Members include any person or business that has made a donation to the land trust in a one-year period. Members will hear updates on BRLT activities\, as well as vote on 2019-2020 incoming board members. \nThis year’s meeting will offer a catered lunch by Abbie Shaw of Fine Cuisine (see menu below). A special ticketed raffle will also be held for a beautiful handmade quilt and wooden bowl ($1/ raffle ticket on sale now through the BRLT office or Mathias Fine Art). SUMMARY:3rd Annual Apple Festival: Talk\, Tasting\, and Tour at Oak Point Farm
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon among the apple trees during the 3rd Annual Apple Festival: Talk\, Tasting\, and Tour at BRLT’s Oak Point Farm. This year’s theme is “As American as Apple Pie”. Local orchardist Ron Ross will once again educate and entertain as he presents the rather surprising history of the Apple Pie. After the talk\, participants will have the opportunity to taste a variety of Maine heirloom apples\, make apple cider\, and take a stroll in the orchards at Oak Point Farm. Slices of apple pie and raffle tickets for apple themed prizes will also be available for purchase. \nPresenter Ron Ross serves on the BRLT Board of Directors and as a tour guide at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. He is retired from Drew University where he taught biology and statistics before moving to administration where he became Vice President for Development. Ron and his partner\, Fred Kraeuter\, began Burnham Cove Heirloom Apple Orchard on the River Road in Boothbay in 2014. \nThis event will take place under a tent with adjacent parking in the field at Oak Point Farm\, so folks are encouraged to dress warmly.
