SUMMARY:Paddle to Indiantown Island Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Grab your kayak or canoe and join BRLT Executive Director and registered Maine Kayak Guide Nick Ullo as he paddles out to Indiantown Island Preserve. This 3-mile paddle will begin in the Townsend Gut and travel up the Sheepscot River before landing at the Indiantown Island float. Paddlers will have the opportunity to stretch their legs with a 1-mile hike led by Environmental Educator Tracey Hall\, in which she will share the natural and cultural history of the preserve. This round-trip paddle launches at the float at BRLT’s Oak Point Farm and is best suited for intermediate and advanced paddlers. The deed from the Town of Boothbay for the Cross River Preserve includes a condition that the Boothbay Region Land Trust shall construct\, in a good and workmanlike manner\, a nature center and/or headquarters which has a footprint of no less than 1\,500 square feet. If the Land Trust fails to construct a nature center Improvements fifteen (15) years from May 28\, 2014\, the Town of Boothbay has a right to repurchase the Cross River Preserve for One Dollar ($1.00). The right of repurchase may be exercisable by the Town of Boothbay for a period of one (1) year from May 28\, 2029 and shall cease May 28\, 2030. Because the Land Trust has acquired Oak Point Farm\, constructed a headquarters and a nature center at Oak Point Farm\, since the acquisition of Cross River Preserve\, there is no longer a need for a nature center and/or headquarters at Cross River Preserve. The Board of Directors believes it is misuse of Land Trust assets to construct and maintain a nature center and/or headquarters at Cross River Preserve when it already has a headquarters and nature center at Oak Point Farm. The current story trail features the read aloud book “Room on the Broom” by Julia Donaldson with illustrations by Axel Scheffler. \nThe witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat\, then her bow\, and then her wand!  Luckily\, three helpful animals find the missing items\, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom.  But is there room on the broom for so many friends?  And when disaster strikes\, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon? \n

Proceeds from this walk will help to fund patient support services and lifesaving research. Come join our team! \nParticipants are asked to bring a donation (checks only please\, made out to American Cancer Society) and to wear PINK in support of breast cancer awareness. Half a century after the Clean Water Act radically improved how we handle our sewage\, our once modern facilities have aged beyond their intended lifespans. Pipes are cracking and growing populations push plants to their limits. The threats are mounting\, but the infrastructure hasn’t changed. And\, just when it seems things couldn’t get any worse\, a cancer causing-contaminant (PFAS) enters the scene and threatens to collapse the entire house of cards. In response\, one plant that can’t afford to ever shut down must find clever solutions to an ever-growing mountain of problems. \n\nOver the course of one calendar year\, we follow the day-to-day operations of one wastewater facility and the funny\, close-knit\, and inventive individuals working to keep it all running. There’s Dustin\, Gollum impersonator and self-professed nerd\, who heads the place. With a quick wit he keeps the crew smiling as the plant chugs along. There’s Zac – artist and tattooed gentle giant\, Dustin’s best friend and number two in charge who\, over the course of the year\, absorbs the mounting pressures faced by the plant. And lastly Jimmy\, the youngest member of the team. Under Dustin’s guidance\, Jimmy hopes to overcome test anxiety and pass his entry level operators exam. On a daily basis\, the team laughs and struggles in a plant that looks like a movie set with labyrinths of pipes and blinking panels. \n\nUnless Something Goes Terribly Wrong is a buddy comedy about poop and the thankless pursuit of making a better world. \n\nThis film is provided free to the public on behalf of the Boothbay Region Clean Drinking Water Initiative\, a collaborative project of Boothbay Region Land Trust focused on watershed conservation and protection. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
