SUMMARY:Self-Guided Winter Tree Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:From textured bark to tiny twigs and tree silhouettes etched against a winter sky\, late winter is a wonderful time to sharpen your tree identification skills. This self-guided\, one-mile walk invites you to explore the woods and learn how to identify trees without their leaves by focusing on bark patterns and textures\, buds and leaf scars\, overall tree shape\, and habitat. \nAlong the wooded trail—ending with scenic views of the Cross River—you’ll encounter more than a dozen native tree species. Begin your walk by picking up a winter tree identification pamphlet at the Cross River Preserve parking lot kiosk\, then follow the trail to find the individually marked trees featured in the guide. \nThe trail is open during daylight hours throughout the month of February at Cross River Preserve. \nPlease note that winter hiking conditions may be present. Sturdy boots with traction devices are strongly recommended\, and depending on snow depth\, snowshoes may be required. Conditions can change quickly—participants are encouraged to monitor local weather and trail conditions or call the Boothbay Region Land Trust office at 633-4818 for the most up-to-date hiking information before heading out.
