Land Trust to Host Talk On Managing Woodlots

Owners of woodlots on the Boothbay peninsula are invited to attend a program on managing their properties effectively on Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m., at the Boothbay Fire Department, Rt. 27.
Hosted by the Boothbay Region Land Trust, the program will feature as speaker, Tom Doak, executive director of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine (SWOAM). The program is open to the public, free of charge. Refreshments will be served and attendees will receive a free booklet, “Small Woodland Owner’s Handbook.”
Doak’s talk will focus on owning and enjoying woodlot property for the long-term, including discussion of programs available to reduce property taxes and tips for owning and enjoying wooded land.
SWOAM, a non-profit organization established 30 years ago, has focused on educating, informing and advocating for small woodland owners. Its mission is to “Promote Sound Forest Management and Strengthen Long-term Woodland Stewardship.”
Julie Lamy, BRLT executive director, said the land trust is offering the program as an outreach service in the hope that those attending will find ways to manage their woodlots effectively and find sustainable ways to make money from their land.
This is the land trust’s second outreach event this winter. A program on “Damariscove Remembered” in January drew a capacity audience to the Barters Island Community Hall.
Those interested in attending can reserve a seat by calling 633-4818.
