Rachel Carson Coastal Greenway

The Rachel Carson Coastal Greenway commemorates the life of the scientist who launched the modern environmental movement. Her observations and writings gave the public an increased awareness and understanding of the natural world. From 1953 to 1964 she summered along these shorelines, gaining insight from her studies of life in the sea, in tidal pools and the surrounding deep woods.

In the Sheepscot River, the Boothbay Region Land Trust currently protects islands and areas of shoreline from Cape Newagen north along the eastern side of the Sheepscot River to The Eddy at Fort Edgecomb. These diverse and environmentally significant properties are the foundation of the Rachel Carson Coastal Greenway.

Included are Lower Marks Island, Spectacle Island, Indiantown Island, Porter Preserve, and Miles Island.  None of the islands have docking facilities and only Indiantown Island and Porter Preserve have hiking trails.
