Junior Stewardship Program

To strengthen our community outreach and education-oriented activities, the Boothbay Region Land Trust sponsors a Junior Stewardship Program for the young citizens of the Boothbay region. The BRLT sponsors a fifth-grade environmental program at the Boothbay Region Elementary School incorporating science, math, and social studies. It includes classroom presentations on land trusts, archaeology, and the history of Damariscove Island. The students take field trips to BRLT properties and to Damariscove Island owned by The Nature Conservancy.

The BRLT also sponsors an educational program with the Center for Teaching and Learning, a private school located in Edgecomb near Singing Meadows, one of the BRLT preserves. The students from grades one through eight are learning to become junior stewards at Singing Meadows by conducting plant and wildlife inventories and helping with the pruning of the apple trees.

The Barge/McKee Scholarship for Environmental Studies

The Boothbay Region Land Trust annually sponsors the Barge/McKee Scholarship for students in Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Southport, and Edgecomb. There is no age limit, and the scholarship may be used to attend colleges, schools, camps, and conferences involved in the scientific study of the environment. Scholarships range from $300 to $500.
